Go to Microsoft's page. Ask for Tweak UI. It's on the
Windows 98 disk. For some reason, Bill Gates didn't choose
to give us one on the XP disk.

You can also find it at:

I would personally avoid the "XP Tweak UI" version. It could
be called "overkill."

Then again, some would rather have 500 tools than 50.

If you would give me a real e-mail address, I would also
happily send you the program.

Then again, I'll check if I can post it here.

.....

I'll try. It's an rar file. I used WinRar 3.51 to create it.

When you get Tweak UI, right click on the thing that looks
like a gear, and click "Install". A Help window will open.
Close the Help window, and it will proceed to install.

If you don't close the Help window, it won't proceed.

The whole process if you're waiting to close the Help window
will take less than 10 seconds to install.

Once the install is complete, go to Control Panel, and the
Tweak UI icon will be at the bottom (Control Panel is
alphabetized)

Open Tweak, and I believe the 3rd tab is called "Explorer".

Toward the bottom, there's a list of selections. The top one
is check marked. "Shortcut to".

click to unselect it.

Apply
Ok,
get out of control Panel.

Reboot.

Your shortcuts should no longer have the "Shortcut to" on
them.

the QUICK way, is to create some 10 shortcuts. Rename them
as you create them. (deleting the "Shortcut to") Eventually,
you will find that as you create new shortcuts, somewhere
in the 10 - 20 shortcut process, you will find that the
computer has "wised up" and stopped adding those words to
your shortcuts.

This drives me crazy, too. But some genius at Microsoft
thinks we don't know it's a shortcut.

I suppose if enough of us complained, Microsoft or SOMEONE
would write a patch.
