Repair install from the XP SP2 CD?

I have a copy of the XP SP2 CD. Can this CD be used to do a repair
installation?

(I am struggling with a complicated XP Home reinstallation from the Dell CD.
The first attempt has resulted in some weird results that seem inconsistent
so I will not try to describe them as I would just be wasting your time I
fear.)

Thanks for any tips...

Paul
