Re: Hotfix KB912919 is dangerous!!

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

This is a known problem with NIS & NPF.

Some have posted that /something/ on this Symantec page fixed it (Disabling then re-enabling Protection?): http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2005083015103436

Some have posted that simply disabling and re-enabling the firewall fixed it.

YMMV.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

I took your advice and uninstalled this hotfix but still my e-mail
couldn't connect to the server. I traced it to the Norton Firewall which
when turned off solves the problem. Reinstalled the hotfix and still it's
the firewall so it has maybe done something permanent to it by the look
of things and so far I've yet to find out how to change it back as O/E is
being "allowed" in the programmes - weird!!
