XP Home start to log on then logs off

I have Win XP Home Edition. Since yesterday, when I try to log on from
the Welcome screen (any user or Admin) it starts to load my personal
settings, then immediately logs me back off without a message. I am
able to log on in Safe Mode with Networking in all profiles.

Searching this topic online, I found many solutions recommending fixes
involving viruses that affect userinit.exe (wsaupdater.exe, for
example) but I don't think that's the case here - the Registry
(Winlogon) looks fine, and I am able to log on in Safe Mode.

I have tried creating new user accounts, "changing how users log on"
and other instructions from various support websites.

I bought this refurbished machine last year with I386 Win files on the
hard disk, but no CD.

I should mention that I was trying to set up a wireless SMC router
network when the problems started, but I can't imagine what I could
have done to cause this issue...

Any help/suggestion would be appreciated.
