I've noticed this happening myself. I will make half-a-dozen
changes to my system, and next time I boot, the system is
back "pre-changes".

Not sure what is happening, but try this:

After you have made the changes to your msconfig "startup"
file...

INSTEAD of doing a system reset with the "Reset" button,

do a reset using the "Start" button at the bottom left of
your desktop.

This allows the computer to read all the changes you have
made and set them before it turns off.

When your computer comes back up, you SHOULD find your
changes have stayed changed.

As a "non-techie", I'm afraid that is the best I can do.

However, I hang my system FREQUENTLY. And I often forget to
turn my system off and reboot it after I make changes.

Turning off the computer with the desktop's Start button has
done the trick for me MOST of the time.

Particurly when I use the Tweak UI routines, I find I need
to do a system reset.

Good luck.
