Are you sure that the security settings are set so that the backup process
has read/write permissions to the files on the XP machine? If you created a
share and didn't modify the share permissions, then you simply gave everyone
read access. You'll need to change that. In order for the backup to change
the archive attribute, it needs to at least have modify permissions on the
file.
