Something to be aware of -- the typical router radiation
pattern is sort of a doughnut -- directly over/under the
router is often a dead spot. You didn't say where the
router was relative to you (other than "other room").
Also metal will block the signal (often overlooked are
things like large bathroom mirrors with the metalized
back reflector).
