I dont have the option of pressing "R". i only have the option of installing a fresh copy of Windows in the drive letter i specify. Is this the same?

Sounds like the OEM installation CD you have doesn't offer the repair option. Contact the tech support for your computer and see what recovery options they offer. They might not offer a non destructive recovery.
