Administrator Rights LOST

Hi,
Please forgive this post here but I have not received anything at all from the hardware group - this may be more of a Windows issue than a DVD/RW hardware problem.
A good friend told me that he installed a new DVD/RW internal on a system that already had a CD/RW - he just added the new DVD as a cable select drive to the existing cable to the CD/RW.
After he booted up, he said he lost Admin rights and tried Safe Mode, and everything else he could think of and could not log in. He is the only user on this WinXP Home system.
He removed the DVD/RW and still could not login.
He finally restored an image that he had earlier which got him running again.
I've heard that some folks had problems with being unable to change the Region setting causing a problem but don't know what happened here.
Any comments?
Thanks, Fred .
