Automatic Updates gets you SP2 :-) There are many other updates that also
cause problems with some programs. Don't get me wrong. I think if at all
possible all critical updates should be installed. It is not always
possible. If the admin is so bad at his job why is the whole network not
infected? As evryone is telling you your friend is at least partly to blame.
Is the admin against using Firefox or Netscape? Is your friend's computer a
laptop? Were they connecting through a router? Even with SP2 and all updates
it is still possible to get the malware you talked about in your original
post. Both can be installed by drive by but are usually installed along with
another program or "a needed plugin to view this website". All the
protection in the world won't stop malware from installing if you tell it to
:-)
