It is possible to defend against spyware by other methods than installing
SP2. I have a customer who has custom software (from a large airline) that
they have to use. The software is not compatible with SP2. They used to get
malware all the time because of this. I implemented a proxy server, limited
user accounts, good resident antispyware and antivirus programs, and most
importantly user training. They have not had any malware infections for ten
months now.
I agree that SP2 and other updates should be installed. I also know that
sometimes they can't be other methods of security can be just as effective.
