The free program, IRFANVIEW, has a nice batch file renaming
program that keeps track of file extension, it is nice to be
able to select a group of pictures and change the name from
100001121.jpg (and other numerical sequence) to
springbreak1.jpg to springbreak1000.jpg with just one step.

| To expand a bit on Nepatsfan's comments: if, for example,
you see a
| file "abc.mp3", and you rename it to "def", you have just
taken away
| the file name extension, thus making the file type
unknown. What
| Nepatsfan is saying is that you should retain the
extension when you do
| the rename i.e., specify "def.mp3", not just "def". On the
other hand,
| if the file name extensions are hidden, then all you would
be seeing is
| "abc", in which case you CAN rename it to "def".
