Back in my distant days as a computer salesman, I asked the
regional manager for a famous PC brand the same question about
cleaning his laptop LCD screens. He was very emphatic that
one should use only lightly-moistened cotton balls to clean
LCD panels.
He said the use of anything else (especially chemicals) might
damage the screen's coating, and if that happened, the mfg.
would void the screen's warranty. Back in 2002, LCD panels
cost $800-1800 to replace--depending on brand and model--
and that replacement cost would borne by the customer. He
was especially exercised about the use of Windex type products.
Our general manager once caught a novice salesman cleaning
all our demo laptops' screens with an alcohol-based cleaning
pad designed for CRTs. We did end up with some LCD panels
that were permanently steaked. Sold them as "as is" demo models
for $100 off and they were snapped up. Problem solved.
