XP Update- now USB smartcard reader won't get recognized

I just updated some windows updates from MS (download site)

Now my usb smartmedia card reader will not get recognized by the computer.

I have tried repeatedly to unplug- change locations (front and rear USB
ports)

No recognition- don't even see it pop up on the task bar.

Any one know what's going on with Winders XP updates?- Seems like the
culprit.
