Okay, you said "The various places".
Open up the sound controller you normally use and make sure the master
control shows and the Wav controller shows. Some of these things work
differently (depends on the card maker's driver software to some extent) but
you have options you can set regarding what controls can be displayed and
sometimes what setup of speakers you have.
Some newer cards have dual purpose jacks that can be input or output for
bass speakers and so on, see if you can find any settings in that utility
that may have been changed accidentally.
I'm sorry I can;t be more specific but my Asus Motherboard has this type of
controller on it and one jack sometimes gets changed... are you sure there
isn't an alternative jack just for speakers, it should not do any harm to
try.
In some case there is a speakers jack which is always speakers and one that
can be line in and line out - which will be the same as speakers if
configured as "Out".
