There is a command line utility called shutdown. I forget whether its
bundled with XP, but if you haven't got it then google for it.
Shutdown -s -f
will force the pc to shutdown. I think it gives you a default warning of 20
seconds, but you can control that via command line switches.
To shut windows down at midnight using the task scheduler, create a new task
that runs shutdown (with the appropriate command line flags) every day at
midnight. That should be it.
I use a similar system to shutdown my children's pc when they leave it on
unattended. In my case I shut the pc down (again using shutdown and via the
task scheduler) when the pc has been idle for an hour.
