One alternative is to read the documentation that comes with the PC or
motherboard. That tells if capable, and if there are just a limited number
of ports that do so. But not always, especially PCs regarding a limited
number of ports, not all of them.

The other is to enable USB and USB enhanced in the bios. Assure that those
drivers are installed in XP. You can waste your time in device mangler.
But won't indicate which are USB 2.0 capable if not all of the ports. A
trial USB 2.0 device is the only way. An external, SELF-POWERED, hard drive
w/USB 2.0 capability timing the data movement on a large file or group of
files copying seems to be the best alternative. A true working USB 2.0 port
will be much faster. Proof's in the pudding, not on the table.
