Hello all!
I had this error code and with several days research and beating my
head on my desk I found something that remedied this error.
I found an article that said it could be from missing one of these 3
files: oembios.dat, secupd.dat or oembios.bin from Windows/system32
folder.
I looked (in safe mode) and sure enough I found that I was missing the
oembios.dat file.
After trying to copy this from another computer, etc. without success I
read yet another article saying that in the Windows/I386 folder there
is a backup called OEMBIOS.DA_. However, it is in a compressed state. I
tried to open it with my zip utility but it would not recognize it. So,
I copied it to another folder and renamed it to OEMBIOS.CAB. My zip
utility then recognized it and sure enough, it contained the
oembios.dat file.
I extracted it to the windows/system32 folder and restarted.
When I restarted, windows wouldn't start up. It said some system file
was missing. So, I restarted with a win98 bootup disk, it ran for a
little bit then gave 3 options: install win98, format and install or
exit. Since I have winxp pro, I did an exit. Restarted, and voila! I
was able to log back in!!
I'm not sure if you need to do the whole win98 boot up disk step that I
did, but I thought it may need to be included.
Once I was able to get back in I got my internet started back up,
downloaded some virus scanners and found 10 trojans on the drive!
Hope this helps!
