Which working practice stresses the computer more?

Hi,
Would you say that it is more stressful on the computer components to
keep it running for three hours after you stopped working on it, until
you will work on it again three hours later?
Or would it be more stressful on the computer components if you were to
shut it down immediately after you stop working on it, and then start it
up when you want to use it again in three hours time?
Long long ago I read somewhere that the greatest stress on a computer
occurs when you switch it on from cold. But keeping it running for three
hours without using it does seem a waste of its working life, and for
sure the fans are going to feel the wear on the bearings.
What do you think?
Royston.
