Although Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter are useful programs, they will
not help the OP at all with her problem, particularly if there is a
service and/or program hanging. In addition, randomly shutting down
services without knowing exactly what one is doing is not a good idea.

Andrea, after you check at MVP Kelly Theriot's site as suggested by Rich
Barry, you might also want to go through this excellent shutdown

Please also be sure that your computer is 100% virus and malware-free
since shutdown problems are often caused by malware that refuses to

And finally, did the computer ever work right? If it did, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't? Any new
hardware or peripherals added? New software?
