audio files are crashing everything

I don't know what's going on, but audio files and feeds keep crashing my
programs in Windows. Is there a way for me to investigate what's going on or
missing? Or even more simply, is there a place for me to get everything that
Windows should need to play files properly?

I have experienced this with media player, realplayer, internet audio
streams which I've wanted to hear. I am beyond thinking it's any one program
at this point.
