You can't get "XP working right" without drivers. The usual procedure
is:
1. Install Windows.
2. Install motherboard drivers (chipset).
3. Install graphics drivers.
4. Install audio drivers.
5. Install network card adapter drivers (if not included on m/b).
6. If you are installing a pre-SP2 version, have any OEM patches that
need to be installed before SP2 on hand, burned to disk. Install them.
7. Install SP2 if necessary.
8. Install antivirus.
9. Connect to Internet with Windows Firewall on (or third-party firewall
if you want it and have installed it). Get updates for Windows.
10. Install applications and get updates if necessary (like for MS
Office).
