Wesley,
I had a similar "greyed out STANDBY" problem. Let me expand the question a
bit...
- I have an HP Pavillion zd7000 with WinXP Home.
- It seemed to working fine until I tried to install SP2 (several months
ago).
- I worked with HP and MS in an attempt to resolve problems with no luck
and eventually reformatted and reinstalled XP.
- Recently I decided to try SP2 again but thought I should do a backup
before "messing things up" again.
Question 1: Where is the "Backup" utility? I went to Start/ Programs/
Accessories/ System Tools but it wasn't there! I wandered around a bit in
various directories/folders and even did a search for any file with "backup"
in the name with no luck. Where is it, or, does MS have a reliable version
of the Backup utility posted somewhere?"
Question 2: It is important to me that my laptop goes to "hibernate" (or
"standby") when I close the lid. After installing XP SP2 (several month ago
as mentioned above) I had several problems including...
- When I would shut down the computer, I would go to Start/Turn Off
Computer and you get the "Turn Off Computer" window with three
buttons/choices a.) Standby, b.) Turn Off, and, c.) Restart (i.e., your reply
below asks, "What standby button?"). The "Standby" button was greyed out and
you were not able to select it (I assume this is the same problem referenced
here by 'immakrmboyie').
- In "Power Options" the "Hibernate" tab was completely removed - I could
find no hibernate options anywhere. And,
- The only way to turn the machine off was via the Power button.
Otherwise, the machine would go into perpetual "Restart". (I noticed another
user sent a query re: Perpetual Reboot!) So...
Do you know if there have resolutions to these problems?
When I was dealing with this several months ago the discussions and FAQ's I
read made me suspect these problems were unique to HP - but I'm no longer
convinced it is just an HP problem! Thanks for your help, DasFische
