I'm REALLY in trouble now!

My problem history:

I have an older Dell laptop that came loaded with Win'98SE, I upgraded it to
WinMe and recently, I've been trying to install a wireless adapter, with
absolutely no luck! After talking to Linksys and bouncing several posts
around Newsgroups, I felt that the Linksys adapter was probably defective,
so today I purchased a different brand (Motorola) and I ran into problems
with it too (Missing .dll files, mostly)! So I figured that there must be
something wrong with my OS, so I bought a WinXP upgrade and tried to upgrade
my OS, but ran into another missing file! Being very frustrated, I decided
hell with it, I'm going to choose "New Install" and start fresh, NOT!! The
installation got as far as copying new files & folders, but when it rebooted
itself, I got the following error:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\System32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above
file."

What do I do now? I can't even boot into a Command Prompt and copy the
file, 'course I don't know how to do that anyway!!

Can someone help?

Thank you,
Ray
