default sounds missing in xp

all of my pre-programmed sounds in win xp sp2 are muted for some unknown
reason.
audio in avi,mpg,etc files is OK.
also wav & midi files play on demand.
Any help on where to look for solution?
I have scoured microsoft sounds troubleshooter,but it doesn't cover my
problem
