Something contstantly hitting hard drive.

This is an older HP laptop (500mhz) running XP SP2. I have almost no
software loaded, since it is used primarily as an internet browser on a
wireless network and as a DVD player in our RV. About a week ago, while
watching a DVD in the RV it suddenly started hesitating. (This is with no
network, no modem connection, nothing) The hard drive light was coming on
about every five seconds. I ran a virus scan, a spyware scan, shut down
everything in the systray, went into task manager and shut down the virus
program, even turned off system restore. I cannot figure out what is hitting
the drive.
It had just played two DVD's flawlessly, then something started hitting the
drive, and every time it would hit the drive, the DVD would hesitate.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
