CD-RW stopped reading

I recently changed my AMD Duron 1.3 Ghz, K7S5A computer, with 60 GB HD, 256
MB mem., & LiteOn LTR16101B CD-RW, from Win98SE OS to a clean install of Win
XP Home. Everything worked OK.
After loading and installing updates on the Windows Update site, the CD-RW
stopped reading. Device Manager says that everything is fine, the computer
recognizes the CD-RW correctly in Device Manager and Computer. I can put a
cd in and it will recognize that a cd was inserted. The CD-RW acts like it
is reading the cd but the cd label does not display, the read-out indicates
that there is 0 information and the cd does not start. The computer does not
give any error messages and goes to the next page which should show the
contents of the cd, but the page is blank.
I tried updating the firmware, changing the IDE cable, updating the driver,
uninstalling then reinstalling the drive, doing a repair install of XP Home
(the drive works outside of XP), & do a clean boot. Nothing changed after
the first three processes. I was able to reinstall XP, nothing changed. I
did a clean boot (unchecking everything possible) and was able to have the
drive read. If I left the cd in the drive while bringing back the
winini.exe, the drive would read. If I took the cd out of the drive &
reinserted it, it would not read.
Thinking that the drive was too old and not on the XP list of compatible
hardware, I tried hooking up an external CD-Rom drive. The same thing
happened. I bought a new drive which is XP compatible, a BCT IDE5224, the
same thing is happening. I tried changing IDE2 to IDE1 to see if it might be
the motherboard's IDE connecting, same thing. Help!
