ntvdm & wowexec slow down system

I'm trying to install a program which I purchased recently which
apparently uses a DOS based installer Installshield 5.10.130.0
I've tried running it in safe mode ad well as trying it with only basic
startup (from msconfig) but still no joy.
I've also tried emptying my temp files, changing the path of my TMP and
TEMP variables, running in 1024x768 graphics mode. I even had the
vendor the product is from send me a new CD and also tried copying
everything on the CD to my hard drive. I've also tried running the
SETUP.EXE in compatability mode.
I've tried expanding the wowexec.ex_ and ntvdm.ex_ from my Windows XP
SP 2 disc but still no luck.
I know the CD is good because I was able to install the program on my
computer at work which is runnin Windows 2000 SP4.
My computer is a fairly new laptop with 1 GB of RAM, 70 GB free hard
drive space, Pentium M Celeron processor at 1.6 GHz.
Any other suggestions?
I let the process run for over 30 minutes one time and nothing
happened/
This has got me completely stumped.
Thanks
