restore points-how far back

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

How far back does system restore? How do you control how far back to keep
restor points? I have been trying to fix a problem since February and want
to go back to before then and my restore only goes back to April..I have not
knowingly deleted any restore functions.
