Not sure what you mean by "I connected the wire to the internal USB header...." but on all of my CPU cases that have external USB, IEEE1393,
Audio, or Mike ports, there was always connectors that had to be connected to
particular pins on the mother board (assuming your mother board has such
optional pins for this purpose.
