I don't really like repeating myself, but, in the interest of clarity, I will.
My computer was made for 98 and 2000, before XP was released. I did not buy
my computer from IBM, it is a hand-me-down, off a lease. The swappable drive
bay only holds 1 drive at a time - either the Combo drive or a floppy drive,
which I do not own. I must upgrade the firmware from an external USB floppy
because I cannot boot from the device I'm trying to upgrade, the upgrade
utility is a diskette (remember those?) utility from IBM, and it's physically
impossible for two solid objects to occupy the same space and time...go ahead
and try it.
I do agree that the OS should support it, and in point of fact, XP supports
every function on this drive EXCEPT recording. I have gone through every
exercise I can think of to get it to work (including enabling recording -
which was never disabled in the first place, it's always been enabled when I
try) and nothing is working. The firmware upgrade to the Combo drive is
really the only option I have left before I write a letter to Bill about how
Windows managed to let this piece of hardware fall through the cracks.
Putting my removable devices at the top of the BIOS boot list has no effect
as XP takes over pretty much the instant my booting process begins. Now, the
one piece of info that I have left out to this point is that my copy of XP is
an upgrade to 98, not a full version. I doubt this has anything to do with
the problem, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
Thanks for everyone's input so far, but I'm no closer to solving this than
when I started. Perhaps someone could recommend a different group or
community wher I could get help....
