I ran it and was surprised there was no feedback. I don't know if it found and/or fixed any problems. Is that the expected behavior?

Right click on My Computer, select Manage, Event Viewer, Application, look at Winlogon entries.

Win XP has a version called CheckDisk.
To use CHKDSK click- Start/My Computer/rightclick on the drive you wish to
check/Properties/Tools/Check Now/put a check in both option boxes/Start.
At your next bootup, CHKDSK will run. Be patient - It can take a while.

I used to run a utility called ScanDisk to see if there were any bad blocks on my disk. I can't find this utility in XP. What should I be doing to find bad blocks?
