Have your friend take his machine to a qualified professional computer
repair shop - not his local equivalent of BigStoreUSA. They can image
his drive before making any changes. I find it most unlikely that his
computer can run Win98 but can't take another 64MB of RAM. I suppose if
he has a very ancient machine that is really too old to be even running
Win98 that might be the case, but otherwise it is unlikely. I've never
had a problem updating Win98 machines to the most recent IE, but
without actually seeing the machine that's about all I can suggest.
