Task Scheduler - Error 5

I cannot schedule tasks. The following is from the log file:
"Task Scheduler Service"
Started at 29/05/2005 21:21:31
"Task Scheduler Service" 29/05/2005 21:21:31 ** Error **
A failure occurred during service initialization.
The specific error is:
0x80070005: Access is denied.
Try using the Task page Browse button to locate the application.
"Task Scheduler Service"
Exited at 29/05/2005 21:21:34

If I try to start the scheduler service I get the following:

Could not start the scheduler service on local computer: Error 5 Access
denied.

XP Pro with SP2 installed with all updates and logged in with admin rights.

Any thoughts apart from a complete re-install??
