Make a new XP bootable partition?

Bought a new HD for my laptop. Put it in an external case and formatted the
new drive (it's assigned letter G:). I restored my factory XP Home PQI image
to the new HD, so the G: partition now has XP Home as it shipped from the
factory.
I want to put this HD in my laptop, to replace my current smaller drive and
basically "start over" with Windows. But when I try to boot the laptop with
the new HD installed, I get "No operating system found."
How do I make this partition bootable (while it's in the external case as
G:), so that when I put it into the laptop and it's the only drive, it will
be seen as C: and the computer will boot?
Thanks for any help!
