Yahoo Messenger stalls or locks up XP on COmpaq PC

I am using XP SP2, while using yahoo messenger. Works fine until I try to
use voice, then locks up or stalls system. I hacve tried uninstall/reinstall
of messenger, also reinstalled sound drivers, yet same problem occurs. Yahoo
tech support says it is a driver problem, yet reinstall of sound drivers does
not fix. Any ideas?
