Restore(normally the most effective way to deal with this kind of
problem), but the pop-up reappears as soon as I log into MSN.

Please note that this is NOT the actual Zango program, it's a pop-up
advertising products marketed by 180search Assistant.com. I have no
idea how it got into my hard disk in the first place, as I didn't
download it from any site. It's more than just annoying, it intereferes
with the normal fuctioning of my computer, and although I can't be
certain, I suspect it's using my various email accounts to distribute
copies of itself.

As I said, it appears to be invisible; it doesn't show up on any of my
searches, I can't find it in the program files, and there's no trace of
it when I use the Add/Remove function in the control panel. If you have
any advice on how to get rid of this thing, I would be most grateful to
receive it.

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or "spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.
