*** Keyboard Input Problems after upgrading from XP Home to Pro **

Hello All,
After upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro, I started to get problems with
inputting chars using my keyboard. SP2 was installed and re-installed (using
the 'developer' version of SP2 install image)
The problem doesn't affect the all keys: e.g., '4' on the keybd (not numpad)
displays '$', and '6' will display '^' (i.e., as if I was holding down
SHIFT). Periodically, a dialog also box pops up: mentioning about
FilterKeys, thinking I'm messing with the SHIFT key. I have gone into
'Accessibility Options' to see - FilterKeys was not even turned on
The keyboard that I used is brand new, and, I have swapped it with a couple
of other keyboards functioning fine on other XP Home machines. These other
keyboards also give me the same problem with char input. I'm pretty sure
that it is not a matter of cleaning crap out of the keys.
Another related problem (ie, started to happen after Home to Pro upgrade) is
that when using the mouse in Windows Explorer, if I click i the 'container
pane' (or wahtever its called - the pane beside the folder pane) I select one
file but it highlights ALL files above and including the one I selected (just
like I multi selected)
I know of others, like me, in IT/software dev who have this problem but none
so far have a solution...
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
