There is another detail, the fan may have a 3rd wire for variable speed
control.
Current Intel cpus have onboard thermistors for notification of slowing down
it down when imminent heat limit is nearing. Believe all Pentium series
have this. Has nothing to do with fan speed control however.
Thermistors are used as temperature sensors in the fan speed control
software.
Control of both cpu and chassis fan software has been quite common for the
past 3 or so years. Not all motherboards can support such however. Some
motherboard makers supply this kind of software as an added bonus on their
driver CD.
Some power supply makers are adding fan control speed aspect to their power
supplies.
The whole purpose of controlling a fan is quiet operation of the PC via
slowing down the fan speed or even allowing them to be on. The variable
line is used to slow down or stop the fan, in a 3 wire fan. This 3rd wire
can decrease the voltage introduced to the fan, thus slowing its rpm down or
stopping the fan.
