Slowing performance on laptop

My laptop has been running slower and slower recently. The CPU usage is not
affected, however; it's always low. It's the harddrive that seems to be
working overtime, even for the simplest tasks.

I run anti-virus and spyware removal tools frequently, my harddrive is only
60% full and does not need defragmenting. For all intents and purposes, it
should be running as fast as it did when I first bought it (about 18 months
ago), but it's running slow.

Any ideas?
