First off, you might want to repost your question with some
information pertaining to exactly what problems you're
experiencing. Things like error messages and symptoms would be
most helpful.
If you're convinced you need to check your hard drive then you
can try the following:
Since you're unable to boot into Windows, the only way to run
chkdsk is from the Recovery Console. You will need to boot your
computer from the XP installation CD.
Consult the manual that came with your computer and configure
your PC to boot from the CD drive. If this is not possible, then
you will have to download the appropriate file from this web site
and create floppy disks which you will use to boot the computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994
With the CD in the drive, restart your computer.
Follow the instructions to boot from the CD.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the
Recovery Console.
Follow the instructions and enter the appropriate information
when requested.
You should eventually arrive at a command prompt.
Type in chkdsk C: /r and hit Enter.
Windows will now try to locate and fix any errors on your C
drive.
If you have other drives/partitions on this machine then you
should run chkdsk with the appropriate drive letter inserted
between chkdsk and the /r switch.
