Re: Sound Icon in taskbar disappeared

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hello,

Thanks for your post and let me know your similar question to the original
post here.

You've indicated that Windows volume control is not listed in the taskbar.
You had the problem before with Win Prof 2000 and after installed XP it
corrected itself. But only after a day, the issue returns and it still
persists now. I think the issue is a little bit complex and the situation
should be different from the original post here. Although we are glad to
give you the suggestions regarding the issue, based on our newsgroup's
process and policy, I suggest you can open another new post here so that we
can get the accurate error phenomenon on your side and give the exact
response to you on this issue.

Then I would give you some general steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Based on my experience, this issue can be caused by incorrect system
configuration or missing some system files. We can perform the following
steps to troubleshoot this issue.

Step 1 - You mentioned that you have checked the following System Setting
====

1. Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices

2. In the Volume tab, please check the checkbox beside "Place volume icon
in the taskbar".

3. Click ok to close this window.

Step 2 - Expand the sndvol32.exe file from the CD
====

1. Click Start, go to Run, type in "CMD" and press Enter.

2. In the command mode, type the following commands and press Enter after
each one:

CD C:\Windows\System32

REN sndvol32.exe sndvol32.old

Expand D:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ sndvol32.exe

Note: I am assuming D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM.

Step 3 - System Restore
====

You can try to use the System Restore function as Parker said and this
method has resolved his issue.

Perform a System Restore to be back to the initial status or other correct
state.

Note: if you have some important documents or files which are created after
the restore point, please copy them to My Document. As this, even if you
are back to the initial status, they are still remained in My Documents.

To restore your system to a previous state, we can use the following steps:

1. Before you start, please close all open files and close all open
programs.
2. Click "Start"; Click "Programs or All Programs"; Click "Accessories";
Click "System Tools"; Click "System Restore". The System Restore user
interface should appear.
3. Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click "Next".
4. From the restore points available, select an appropriate restore point
when your system is working correctly and click "Next".
5. Click "Next" again. The restore process will run and your system will
restart automatically.
6. After restarting, check whether your system functions correctly now. If
not, you can undo your last restoration or select another restore point in
System Restore user interface.

HTH and thanks for your understanding!

Thanks & Regards

Amanda Wang [MSFT]
