What does Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults mean??

Printer and Faxes then right-click a printer and select Properties

On the General tab I select Printing Preferences and I see Portrait

On the Advanced tab I select Printing Defaults and I see Landscape.

Can someone tell me what Printing Preferences apples to and to what Printing
Defaults does.

Thanks a lot in advance for any insight!
