Freezing when pressing keyboard key

My computer has taken to freezing when I press a key (any key) after
start-up and I have to keep rebooting until it gives in and then operates
OK. Once it's OK it stays that way until I restart and then I may have to
try booting half a dozen times before it works OK. Is this likely to be
cured by uninstalling and then reinstalling the keyboard driver? I'm sure
it's not the keyboard itself.
