The OP also mentioned "slicing" off a partition, how is that done using
windows with an already existing install? It's obvious to me that 3rd
party resize/moving/partitioning was evident.
Why would the issue be confused? If they have partitionMagic or other
partitioning tools & a suggestion of XOSL than there is no need for the
complications of dual booting/reformatting/re-aligning old & new as you
suggested.....It's actually very easy to setup, no confusion at all.

Ok, agreed...........

Stringent tests?? Any research done on dual booting techniques will
reveal **far** superior techniques other than using windows features.

I personally feel that when giving suggestions other resources should
also be quoted to give a user an option.....And also they should be
warned of the complications that may arise from that wacky dual boot
scenario using windows features.......I personally have been dual
booting for many years and have probably experienced just about every
complication/scenario.....My worst experiences were when I first did it
by allowing bootstrapping(windows's way) and exposed "unhidden" logical
drives with OS's on them....Major nightmare if an individual does not
know what they are doing.........
I'm not challenging your experience, I was just very curious why these
methods of using windows techniques is always evident in feedback with
these dual boot questions.........I'm just amazed at the amount of
complications I see, and that's not isolated to this group only.

Peace..................
