Hesitation while "Looking In:"

I have a real puzzler (at least for me):

Almost every time that I try to open a file in almost any application, there
is a hesitation of anywhere from one second to several seconds when I try to
change the "Look In:" location in the pull down.

I am using XP Home Edition V5.1 SP2 on a small business network with 10
active users. None of the other machines (all with the same OS) are having
this problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
