Highlighted programs

I have recently reformatted my hard drive and re-installed XP and notice that
several programs in the program list appear to be 'highlighted' with a
different colour.
As this is something that I had not noticed previously I would appreciate if
anyone can advice as to why this is.
At first I thought it might indicate the most recently used programs or
something but this does not appear to be the case.
I would therefore welcome on why these particular programs are highlighted
in this way and is it possible to change this so all listed programs appear
with the normal white background.
