When I first turn on my computer the following message appears:
"Svchost.exe Application Error. Instruction at oX77308F01 referenced memory at 0X3003054. Memory could not be written. Ok to terminate or cancel to debug."

I always cancel and re-start my computer as I do not understand all this. Can anyone tell me what is wrong please? (I only have a very basic understanding of computers ... I can turn them on and off but that is it!)

I have a 15 month old Dell 4600c with Windows XP Home Edition with all latest updates and drivers. Software includes MS Office, AVG anti-virus, MS anti-spyware.

Elaine, if you boot into safe mode does this happen? To get into safe mode turn on or if logged in, restart the computer. Just as the first BIOS screen disappears start tapping the F8 key until you get a menu that has several options, one of them is safe mode. Choose this. If the computer boots into safe mode w/o any problems then it means something is loading on a normal boot up that is causing the problem.

The first thing to do is a thorough scan for malware. I know you have AVG and MS anti-spyware but that's not enough. No one or two programs catches it all. Also have you been running regular scans in safe mode? All scans for malware should be done in safe mode. Below I list some programs to run to check for malware.

After doing a malware check if the problem still happens, the next thing is to eliminate programs from starting up to see which one is causing the error. It's called clean boot troubleshooting. Here are some links on how to do that:

After you have done these things post back with the results.

For viruses, start with Trend Micro’s Sysclean and McAfee’s Stinger. Download them and the Sysclean signature file. Turn off system restore, boot into safe mode and run them. Boot back into normal mode and run a full AV scan with your normal AV program. Then turn system restore back on.

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update and run them weekly.
