There is no way to downgrade from XP to ME short of doing a clean reinstall
of ME. There is no way you will be able to keep your filestructure intact.
This means you will lose all your programs and data, unless you back them up
before reinstalling ME.

This will entail repartitioning and formatting your HD to prepare it for
installation of ME and ME-compatible programs, devices, and device drivers.

I never would have tried installing XP on a 233mhz computer in the first
place. It would be an exercise in futility, as you have discovered.
