File & Transfer Wizard won't recognize CD drive

My new computer runs Win XP Pro; I have installed only a few utilities and
the modem so far, and want to transfer stuff from the old computer
(particularly email, address books, etc.)
According to info I read on Microsoft site, I can use removeable media
(floppy or CD) to copy the files/settings from old computer, then use Wizard
on new computer to install.
Okay, so I make the floppy disk, put it in the old computer and ran the
F&TWizard. One dialog box asks where I want to send my selected files and
offers "floppy disk or other removable media." While "a:" drive is
highlighted, the drive with the Cd writer is invisible and I cannot figure
how to make it recognized. (Drive D: is Plextor read/write, using Direct CD
or Easy CD as required). The CD was formatted for reading on any computer
and the drive shows up if I use the "Send to" feature.
Old computer: If I were to select "save to removable drive or hard drive",
such as C:, I am asked if I want to put the stuff in a particular folder, or
name a folder. Do I do either, or just hit the save? If that works, would
I then copy the whole thing to a CD and move it over to the new computer?
And will naming a folder interfere with the new computer's ability to see
the transferred stuff?
I am at a loss so far. The cable method would not work for me because I
only have one monitor (the "old" monitor isn't very old, so I will use it
with the new computer). Right now, I am moving cables back and forth
between computer boxes so I can continue my work on the old box while I try
to get the new one up to speed.
All suggestions are welcome. -- Judy
